For the last two years, LandYield has been working to expand access to the voluntary carbon market to the vitally important private forest owners of the US. For too long, small family forest owners were missing out as Fortune 500 companies invested billions into nature-based carbon sequestration projects. Forest carbon projects like LandYield’s have long been recognized as among the most cost-effective and co-benefit rich methods for reaching de-carbonization targets.
Now, LandYield is excited to announce the next step in our journey with the acquisition of the CORE Carbon platform from Finite Carbon. LandYield and Finite Carbon have worked together over the last two years to create carbon project sites across 16 states, providing families forest owners and rural communities with valuable revenue, and giving companies an opportunity to invest in ecological climate solutions in their own backyard. Using the cutting-edge technology of the CORE Carbon platform, landowners and their advisors can quickly assess carbon revenues from their forest stands and decide which parts of their forest property are best suited to enroll in a carbon project given their personal and long-term objectives. Bringing the CORE Carbon platform and its incredibly talented staff in-house will allow us to expand its program to new regions of the country as well as expand our offerings to landowners.
CORE Carbon uses a range of remote sensing data, machine learning, and traditional Forest Service inventory ground plots to remotely assess carbon sequestration and storage in forests across 26 states and counting. This powerful technology allows LandYield to enroll private forest owners with as few as 40 acres and return carbon revenues that were previously only available to landowners with thousands of acres. Setting up a project with LandYield is easy, fast, and free. Most eligible landowners can set up a project and start receiving payments within a few weeks. Compare that with other programs that can take up to 6 months just to assess eligibility and start enrollment. In many cases, landowners may wait up to 2 years to receive payments and then need to repay thousands of dollars in development costs.
For landowners already enrolled and receiving quarterly payments for keeping their forests intact, little will change. For interested landowners, you can still expect that same real-time information about eligibility and revenue, and the personal and hands-on approach that sets LandYield apart.
The investment to acquire CORE and the expansion of LandYield’s program to the Lake States region later this year demonstrates our long-term commitment to our landowner partners. LandYield is a proud part of Mercuria’s $500 million commitment to decarbonization and restoration of natural ecosystems through its investment vehicle Silvania.
